Bike Tour: Aachen - Trier - 7 days

The Eifel is a low mountain range on the border of Germany and Belgium. From the cathedral city of Aachen to the Roman city of Trier, cycle along undemanding bike tracks that avoid most of the hefty climbs the region is known for. Because the route is easy-going, you will find you will be able to focus more on the diversity and beauty of the landscape, the historical towns, the castles and reservoirs you will encounter along the way.

If you conjure up pictures of the Eifel in your mind, no doubt you will see beautiful views, quiet roads, green surroundings and many climbs. On this cycle route all are true except for the latter. The city of Aachen is the official starting point of the Vennbahn, a former railroad (now bike track) that runs all the way to Troisvièrges in Luxembourg. Nowhere do the slopes have more than a 2% gradient.

From Bütgenbach to Losheimergraben, you will follow a new Belgian path for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders, called RAVel, which also climbs very gradually.

From Losheimergraben, pursue the Kyll Valley Cycle Route to Trier.

Route
Day 1: Arrival in Aachen
Day 2: Aachen - Monschau
Day 3: Monschau - Bütgenbach
Day 4: Bütgenbach - Gerolstein
Day 5: Gerolstein - Bitburg
Day 6: Bitburg - Trier
Day 7: Departure from Trier

Day 1:    Arrival in Aachen

Organize your own journey to Aachen. Arrive early to make the most of your day in this popular city. The cathedral draws the crowds, but the city of Charlemagne, Father of Europe, harbours many more tourist attractions, such as the old city walls, art museums and the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Day 2:    Aachen - Monschau
53 km

The Vennbahn starts at Aachen-Rothe Erde railway station. This railtrail was Bicycle Route of the Year in 2014. Today it will take you to Monschau. The Vennbahn has a gentle gradient of no more than 2%: In the course of the day you will climb 250m almost without realizing it. Your first stop is Kornelimünster. After leaving the built-up area of Aachen province behind you, each new scene of natural beauty will surpass the previous. Crown your day in Monschau, an enchanting Eifel town esteemed for its beautiful half-timbered houses. Relax at a quiet pavement cafe or browse the specialty shops.

Day 3:    Monschau - Bütgenbach
28 km

You have time to go for a walk through the historical town center of Monschau before you leave. From Monschau cycle uphill on a beautiful route along the River Rur. Once you are back on the Vennbahn, the route will undulate gently through High Fens nature park, one of the few remaining areas of upland moor in Europe. Stop off at Robertville, a Belgian town formerly known for its peat cutters but now best known for its impressive reservoir. Continue to a second reservoir at Bütgenbach, the Belgian town where you will spend the night.

Day 4:    Bütgenbach - Gerolstein
58 km

Yesterday you left the Vennbahn behind you and proceeded on RAVel 45a to Bütgenbach. Today you will continue on this beautiful path to Büllingen and then almost imperceptibly slip back across the border near Losheimbergraben. Back in Germany, pursue the Kyll Valley Cycle Route mostly downhill on the banks of the River Kyll. Do take your time to visit the ruins of Kronenburg and the village down below, boasting an interesting history museum. Next up are Stadtkyll and Jünkerath before you reach the spa town of Gerolstein, known for its mineral water.

Day 5:    Gerolstein - Bitburg
41 km

From Gerolstein mineral water to Bitburg beer. What a nice prospect for today! Pass the idyllic villages of Birresborn, Mürlenbach, Densborn and Kyllburg along the way. This leg of the route has some short steep climbs of approx. 100 - 300 meters long; as well as long and satisfying descents. After Kyllburg you will encounter your greatest challenge: a 2.5 km-long climb with substantial gradients. Your reward after conquering the ascent: The descent is equally steep. If you don’t feel up to this climb, no problem! Just catch a train from Kyllburg to Erdorf. This train ride will shorten today’s cycling route by 6 km. From Erdorf, cycle to the town that is home to Bitburg beer. By the end of the day you will have earned yourself a drink.

Day 6:    Bitburg - Trier
52 km

From Bitburg there is a wonderfully long descent to the River Kyll. Follow the bicycle path along the river bank. The scenery is diverse: from open landscapes with lovely views to woods and through picturesque villages. The Kyll river and the railway are never far away. If you have an early start in the morning, you will have time to explore Trier at the end of the day. The city has many Roman remains such as the Porta NIgra, the amphitheater, the Roman baths and the Basilica. Here, the River Kyll empties into the Moselle.  So, if you don’t yet feel like going home, you have other options….

Day 7:    Departure from Trier

After breakfast, your holiday will come to an end.
