Bike Tour: Limburg - Cycling along unique cycling experiences - 7 days

Limburg - Cycling along unique cycling experiences

Limburg is perhaps the most beautiful cycling province in Belgium. Well-maintained cycling routes, a variety of forest, heath and meadows and three unique cycling experiences. Where else can you cycle through a pond so that you are at eye level with all the life in and on the water? Or a cycle path right through the treetops in the Forestland? How about a cycle path right through the Mechelse Heide, culminating in a beautiful wooden bicycle bridge from which you have a magnificent panoramic view of the area? During this cycling holiday you will discover it all.

Day 1: Arrival Genk
Day 2: Genk - Peer
Day 3: Peer - Houthalen
Day 4: Houthalen - Tongeren
Day 5: Tongeren - Rijkhoven
Day 6: Rijkhoven - Genk
Day 7: Departure from Genk

Day 1:    Arrival Genk

Arrival in a lovely hotel located outside the center. If you arrive early, you can already make a beautiful tour through the area or enjoy the facilities of the hotel.

Day 2:    Genk - Peer
53 km

The first day of this cycling holiday takes you over the Kempens Plateau. The journey immediately starts with a highlight: Cycling through the Heathland. You cycle on a cycle path right through the Mechelse Heide, one of the largest heathland areas in Flanders. The literal highlight of this cycle path is a 300 meter long wooden bicycle bridge from which you have a beautiful panoramic view of the landscape. You cycle through the vast pine forests of the Hoge Kempen National Park and through the Ophovenderheide. There is time for coffee in the small towns of Opglabeek and Meeuwen. Today's final destination is small town of Peer, one of the 'Good Towns' of the former Prince-Bishopric of Liège. Here you will find the Pieter Bruegel museum, among others.

Day 3:    Peer - Houthalen
64 km

History and nature alternate rapidly today. Soon you will cycle through Hechtel, this village was completely destroyed in September 1944 during the Battle of Hechtel. Through the Pijnven forest you cycle through a new unique cycling experience in Limburg: Cycling through the Trees. A 700 meter long cycle path takes you through a double circle at a height of 10 meters. You literally cycle in higher atmospheres between the treetops of the Bosland. A little further on you come to Leopoldsbrug, here the 30th British Army Corps started its march during Operation Market Garden. From history you quickly return to nature. In the Valley of the Zwarte Beek you can just spot the bluethroat, snipe or the black woodpecker. Via 'the tram track' you arrive in Houthalen. Here you will find relics from the time when coal was still mined here.

Day 4:    Houthalen - Tongeren
64 km

After you have left Houthalen, you will soon cycle through the Wijers, also known as the land of 1001 ponds. You cycle through a series of nature reserves with unique flora and fauna. After crossing the Prince Albert Canal, you will cycle on beautiful roads and along small villages. You can settle down for lunch in Alken, but today it might be much more fun to have a picnic along the way at one of the many hidden treasures along the way. In the meantime, it slowly heads south through the Limburg countryside. The roads are gently sloping, extensive meadows alternate with fruit orchards, forest passages, rivers and a few castles. Tongeren, the oldest city in Belgium, is a former Gallo-Roman settlement. Several relics from this time can still be found in and around the city.

Day 5:    Tongeren - Rijkhoven
50 km

In addition to a past from Roman times, Tongeren also has many remnants from later times, such as the Moerenpoort, the Spanish house and the Sint Catharinabegijnhof. Once on the bike, you follow a beautiful route through the Jekerdal. This river runs through the French-speaking part of Belgium and brought you via, among other things, the famous Fort Eben-Emael to Kanne, located on the Jeker and the Albert Canal. Here you can visit the Kanne caves. A little later you cycle briefly on Dutch territory and you pass another place of interest in Kanne: Château Neercanne. Via the Muizenberg you climb out of the Jekerdal again and you continue towards today's final destination. At the end of this day you will experience another "historical" highlight: a bike ride over the Landcommanderij Alden Biezen, a unique castle domain.

Day 6:    Rijkhoven - Genk
62 km

After a few kilometers the town of Bilzen is on the route. Take a leisurely stroll through this town and settle down on a terrace for an early cup of coffee before continuing on your bike. After that, there is even more to see and experience this day: Hasselt, the fashion and gin city of Belgium. The route then leads through nature reserves and then reaches the next unique cycling experience: Cycling through the Water. A 200-metre cycle path that leads right through one of the ponds of the pond area De Wijers, through which you have already partly passed earlier this holiday. A subsequent (optional) visit to the Bokrijk Open Air Museum rounds off this day perfectly.

Day 7:    Departure from Genk

After the breakfast, your cycling holiday has come to an end.
